Day 4
Trek to Monjo

An early start after breakfast is planned to avoid the rush of trekkers and porters arriving from Kathmandu. Passing by lovely Sherpa settlements, along gentle undulating trails and enjoying the marvellous scenery of the Dudh Kosi valley, we arrive at the village of Phakding (8700’/2652m). After a break for lunch, we continue on for approximately three more hours to Monjo. The sounds of plodding porters with transistor radios stuck to their ears, the cacophonic mix of myriad languages, strange sounding birds, the sight of porters, loads aside, resting outside tea houses, weather-beaten, windblown trekkers winding their way back to Lukla, prayer flag a-flutter, the brightly painted tea houses and of course the dramatic scenery are memories to treasure of this first day on the trail.

Day 6
Trek to Tashinga via Namche

A scant five minutes from the lodge you enter the Everest National Park, where entry formalities will have to be completed. Today will be one of the tougher days of the trek but we take it slowly, enjoying the scenery as we hike along the river, crossing and re-crossing it on suspension bridges till the climb begins to Namche Bazar. A long steep climb but with several stops to catch our breath, and a slow plod, we make our way steadily upwards. The trail to Namche Bazar is well marked, comfortably broad trails and walking in the cooler part of the morning, it is easier to breathe and get used to the increasing altitude. After an easy-paced three hour walk, we arrive at the heart of Khumbu – Namche Bazar, (3450m). A well deserved break for lunch and enough time to look around this amazing amphitheatre, and then we take the trail to Tashinga, following the classical approach route to Everest. Keeping to the almost level, winding trail for about 2 1/2 hours, we make a slight detour off the main trail to arrive at the lodge within the next 15 minutes.

Note for the day: On your route today, you will cross the tremendously impressive suspension bridge named Hillary Bridge after Sir Edmund of Everest fame. As you climb along the zigzag path nearly half way up the hill to Namche Bazaar, if the sky is clear, your first view of Everest and Lhotse comes into sight. Follow the classic trail towards Everest.

Day 7
Excursion to Tashinga and Back

Looking across the valley from the lodge, one can see the path sloping diagonally upwards to the famous monastery of Tengboche. Begin the day’s trek by descending to the small hamlet of Phunki Tenga lying beside the Dudh Kosi. Cross the suspension bridge before beginning a steep ascent for about an hour. This part of the trail passes through fairly heavy forest of rhododendron and pine so it is well shaded and cool. Once out of the forest, the trail becomes gentler and more gradual for another 1 1/2 hours, all the way to the monastery. The setting of Tengboche is magical, positioned against a backdrop of some of the Himalayas most brilliant peaks. The monastery was accidentally burned down only a few years ago and rebuilt largely through the efforts of the Sir Edmund Hillary Trust. After a leisurely lunch and a tour of the monastery and its surroundings, retrace back.

Note for the day: The Tengboche Monastery is the largest and the leading centre of Buddhist spirituality and pilgrims in the Khumbu region and has received international media coverage in recent years. On your visit there, do not forget to be blessed by the residing Rinpoche.

Crossing the Edmund Hillary Bridge, we shall soon be in the familiar surroundings of the lodge at Monjo. Dinner and overnight at the Lodge.

Note for the day: Stop at the Sagarmatha National Park visitors’ centre and museum at Namche, where there are educational displays on the culture, geography, geology, climatology and wildlife of the Khumbu region.

Climate

Temperatures in the Everest region are quite cool after sundown but due to the strong sunlight at high altitudes, it is usually warm during the day. If the weather is good you will certainly be trekking in a t-shirt and long shorts or light trekking trousers, and a sun hat. The monsoon traditionally arrives around mid-June and clears away by the end of September leaving clear skies, warm temperatures during the day and cooler ones by night. The best time to visit the Everest region is from beginning of October until the end of May. Temperatures steadily decrease as you proceed towards the end of November and it can be quite cold at higher altitudes until the end of February.

Important note:

Every effort will be made to keep to the above itinerary but as this is adventure travel, we cannot guarantee it! By its very nature adventure travel involves an element of the unexpected, particularly in remote and/or mountainous regions. A variety of factors such as adverse weather conditions, difficulties with transportation and the health of group members can all contribute to the need to make changes, often at the very last minute. Changes can affect any part of the itinerary including overnight stops, duration of walking days, choice of accommodation and routing. Your trek leader will make every effort to maintain the integrity of the original itinerary and minimize the impact of any changes, but an easy-going and flexible nature is a real asset! Please note that all timings and distances given are approximate. Being in the mountains, flights can be delayed or cancelled due to weather conditions, thus the first night at Lukla gives us the buffer day in case of any delays or cancellation.
